The Beginning
Georgia Lee "Girly" Ford Johnson was born on March 22, 1939 to the parentage of Leon Ford and Rosie Lee Smith in St. Francisville, Louisiana. In her teens, "Girly" sang with the "Ford Singers", Melinda, Jessie and Carrie Ford, and Feltus Gray.
The Student
In 1956, Georgia Lee graduated from Dawson High School located in St. Francisville, LA. It was a seven mile walk to school, but Georgia Lee walked through Carter Percy's cow pasture to shorten the number of miles to three. She did not take the warning from Mr. Percy's daily yelling, "Gal, go back." She would just wave and continue on her way. With no respect of person, she was swift with the replies. Jesse asked her, "Girly, why don't you take the bus the long way?" Her comment: "Mr. Percy can just shoot me". Mammy Georgiana asked her one day if she had been in the chicken coop and taken the eggs? With her voice elevated a bit, her response wailed "No mammy! I AIN'T been that way today"!
The Marriage
On October 2, 1958, Georgia Lee married Alphonse (Bosey) Johnson. A total of ten children were born to this union. They were married for 42 years before his death in August 2000.
Work History
Her occupation was that of a Home Health Care Worker. At that time, it was rare for a woman, and especially one of color, to run her own business. She owned and operated her bar, Georgia's Lounge, for many years.
Christian Journey
Rev. Towles Payton baptized her at Magnolia Baptist Church when she was a young child. As her life began to shift towards her spiritual journey, something happened to the perfectionist of imperfections. She later became a member of the Mt. Gillion Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Pastor Lucious T. Hargrove. Under the late Pastor John Marcell's leadership, she joined the Deaconess Board as well as the Golden Girl Singers (Inez Christy, Ollie Bell Weam, and Willie Mae Johnson). No longer did she do the things she used to do. If you visited her home during her latter years, you were likely to hear her preach or sing gospel songs. She would sometimes sneak away from the family gatherings of laughter and music to have a talk with Jesus.
The Generations
As a mother, she was blessed to see her children grow up, see their accomplishments, and join them in their homes. She was respected and honored by her children with their petition to meet at her house on West Lane. She prepared Sunday meals for her family members until her children took over. Once, her grandchildren prepared the Thanksgiving dinner. Whether celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, or "just because" for years, reminiscing over old times at the matriarch's home. Her red beans were well cooked, but she also made sure she had white beans for "Baebae"! She was also famous for her fried chicken and gumbo.
An Appeal from the Matriarch
In honoring and obeying their mother's last plea: "I want to go home", her children accepted the will of God and brought their mother home. On May 6, 2022, at 3:40 AM, Georgia Lee crossed over to a better place as her heavenly Father beckoned her to her eternal home as she rested peacefully while sleeping, telling her it was now safe to cross.
Cherished memories
are entrusted to her children, Doris Pope of St. Francisville, Margie (Johnny) Noble, Dorcas (Quincy) Williams, Carol (Otis) Nacoste, Calvin Lee (Rena) Johnson, Dexter (Jillian) Johnson, and Nichole (Boris) Battle all of Prairieville, LA, four step-children, Marie Mason of Erwinville, LA, Sonja Cato of Port Allen, LA, Veola (Eric) Johnson and Angela (Christopher) Thompson both of Baton Rouge, LA, two grandchildren, forty seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Jessie (Beatrice) Ford of New Orleans, LA, one sister Melinda Parker of Lindwood, Illinois, she held a special place in her heart for nephew, Roosevelt (Dorothy) Hampton and niece Naurmey (Eddie) Wms-Antione both of Baton Rouge, LA and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Georgia Lee was preceded in death
by her husband, Alphonse Bosey Johnson; two sons, Alphonse Jr., and Donald R. Johnson; a daughter, Patty Johnson, her parents, Leon Ford & Rosie Lee Smith; grandparents, Nathaniel and Georgiana Ford and Towles and Debbie Payton; four brothers, Frank and Leon Ford, James Smith and Robert Gilmore; three sisters, Viola Blacher, Precilla and Carrie Ford; seven grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Sharon Johnson; son-in-law, John Pope, and a step-daughter, Patricia Batitse.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the overwhelming amount of love shown to them during their moment of bereavement. No act of kindness has gone unnoticed, and a more formal thank you will be done at a later date.
